The Institut de Cultura (Institute of Culture) is the entity of the
Ayuntamiento de Barcelona (City Council of Barcelona) that coordinates culture as one of the principal assets of development of and projection of the city.
Created in 1996, it manages the equipments and cultural services and promotes the multiple cultural platforms of private initiative that emerge and/or are established in Barcelona.
The objectives are:
> To consolidate the culture as basic strategy of development of the city of knowledge
> To favour that Barcelona turns in to a factory of production of cultural content
> To favour the activities of popular and traditional culture, as well as the activities of the cultural affiliations of Barcelona
> To complete and to remodel the patrimonial equipment of the city and to improve its management
> To encourage the educational dimension of culture
> To facilitate the incorporation of the cultural sectors to the flows of the digital age
> To articulate metropolitan strategies in the field of culture
> To implant the plan of libraries approved by the Ayuntamiento
> To articulate actions to improve the cultural performance in the suburbs and districts of the city
